How we check the rules

  • Every rule comes from the town's own bylaws, regulations or beach pages, or the National Park Service. Each page links to its source and shows when we checked it.
  • Where we could only find a rule in a guide or an older document, we say so and mark it "not yet confirmed".
  • Dates like Memorial Day and Labor Day move each year; the map works them out for the day you pick.
  • Shorebird closures change during the season, so beach signs always take priority over this site.
  • We add the US state by state, starting on the coast. A state goes live only once its beaches are checked; anything we haven't checked isn't on the map.
  • Paws on the Sand is independent. We started in the UK.
